The heavy tank destroyer Elefant was developed during World War II for the Wehrmacht's anti-tank units. The first production models were built using the VK 45.01 (P) chassis and were initially named "Ferdinand" in honor of the famous designer Ferdinand Porsche. Heavily armored and equipped with the powerful 88 mm. gun, capable of destroying enemy tanks at long range, they made their debut at the Battle of Kursk, the largest “clash of tanks” in history. However, the vehicle's design had limitations in mobility, speed, and technical reliability, which affected its performance at Kursk. The Ferdinand units still in service by the end of 1943 were upgraded with improvements and modifications to the new standard, under the final designation "Elefant."

It was developed on the hull of the M3 Lee / Grant tank on which was installed the original French GPF 155 mm gun. The main armament, the ammunitions and the gun crew were located in an open topped area at the back of the vehicle. Only the driver's and the radio operator’s seats were protected. To absorb the effects of the recoil when using the artillery piece, the M-12 was equipped with a rear blade that was lowered and fixed into the ground.

Equipped with a 6 cylinder 110 Hp Hercules JXD petrol fuelled engine, it could reach a maximum speed of 81 Km/h. Equipped with four-wheel drive, it was used for patrol, reconnaissance and command post. The vehicle could carry up to 8 men and was armed with a 12.7 mm Browning M2 machine gun plus two more Browning 7.7 mm machine guns on the sides. It was first used in the Philippines campaign in 1941. Used in North Africa and in Sicily, it was replaced during the war, for advanced exploration tasks, by the more modern M8 Greyhound. Besides being used by the American Army, it was used as well by the Armed Forces of England, France and by some divisions of the Red Army who used it on the Eastern front to pull 76 mm ZIS-3 cannons.

On December 16, 1944, the German army launched a major offensive through the dense Ardennes forest in Belgium, codenamed “Wacht am Rhein.” The city of Bastogne, a crucial road junction and significant logistical center, was one of the primary objectives of the strategic plan. The Belgian town and its surrounding areas were encircled by German forces, effectively isolating a large number of American troops within the pocket. These troops withstood numerous enemy assaults for several days under adverse weather and environmental conditions. The resistance of the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles” was legendary. On December 26, the siege was lifted by a counteroffensive from several armored divisions of the U.S. Third Army, under the command of General George Smith Patton.

The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt undoubtedly holds a significant role in the history of military aviation. This single-seat, low-wing American fighter-bomber was notable for its powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine, which produced over 2,000 HP, enabling it to achieve remarkable speeds, particularly at higher altitudes, and to offer extraordinary operational flexibility. The P-47 was effective both as a fighter, providing escort to bombers, and as a lethal aircraft for ground support and attack missions. Its airframe was exceptionally robust, and it was heavily armed with eight 12.7 mm Browning M2 machine guns. Additionally, it could be equipped with bombs and rockets to enhance its offensive capabilities. The P-47 was successfully employed by the United States from 1943 onwards across various operational theaters.
